When the Eye Becomes the Doorway to the Heart
When we hear the command “lower your gaze,” our minds usually go immediately to looking at what Allah has forbidden between men and women. That is certainly at the heart of the command—but the discipline of the gaze reaches much further.
The eye is one of the great entrances to the heart. What we repeatedly allow our eyes to rest upon does not necessarily remain an image. It can become a desire, a comparison, an envy, a suspicion, a memory, or eventually a condition of the heart.
Allah says:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what they do.”
Qur’an 24:30
And immediately afterward:
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity…”
Qur’an 24:31
Notice Allah’s words:
That is purer for them.”
Lowering the gaze is therefore not simply about avoiding a prohibited act. It is an act of purification.
Lower Your Gaze from What Allah Has Forbidden
Jarīr ibn ʿAbdullāh, may Allah be pleased with him, asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about an accidental glance. He said:
“He commanded me to turn my gaze away.”
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
The first unexpected sight may come without invitation. What happens afterward is where discipline begins.
During the Farewell Pilgrimage, al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with him, was riding behind the Prophet ﷺ when a woman from Khathʿam came to ask a question. Al-Faḍl began looking at her, and she at him. The Prophet ﷺ turned al-Faḍl’s face away.
No long lecture.
He simply redirected the gaze.
The Prophet ﷺ also taught:
“The zina of the eye is looking.”
Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
Because the eye can open a door that the heart may struggle to close.
Lower Your Gaze Even When the Other Person Cannot See You
A remarkable narration takes the lesson even further.
ʿAbdullāh ibn Umm Maktūm, may Allah be pleased with him, was a blind Companion. Umm Salamah and Maymūnah, may Allah be pleased with them both, were with the Prophet ﷺ when he entered.
The Prophet ﷺ instructed them:
“Observe hijab from him.”
They said:
“O Messenger of Allah, is he not blind? He cannot see us or recognize us.”
He ﷺ replied:
“Are you two blind as well? Do you not see him?”
Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī
There is scholarly disagreement regarding the grading and application of this narration, so it should not be placed at the same level as the reports of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Yet its meaning presents a striking reminder: guarding the gaze is concerned with what your own eyes are taking in, not merely with whether someone is looking at you.
Lower Your Gaze from What Is Not Yours
There is another kind of looking that can quietly disturb the heart.
Looking at other people’s lives.
Their homes.
Their wealth.
Their beauty.
Their marriages.
Their children.
Their careers.
Their travels.
Their success.
Their possessions.
Allah says:
“Do not extend your eyes toward what We have given some of them to enjoy—the splendor of the worldly life…”
Qur’an 20:131
And He says:
“Do not wish for what Allah has favored some of you with over others.”
Qur’an 4:32
Sometimes lowering the gaze means simply saying to yourself:
Allah gave this to them. I do not need to keep looking at it.
Not every blessing belonging to someone else needs to become an object of our attention.
Lower Your Gaze from People’s Faults
There are things the eye is capable of discovering that the believer should have the nobility not to investigate.
Allah says:
“And do not spy.”
Qur’an 49:12
The Prophet ﷺ also prohibited searching for people’s hidden faults.
This means lowering our gaze from the embarrassing moment.
From the mistake someone hoped nobody noticed.
From someone’s private conversation.
From a screen that is not ours.
From a message that was not intended for us.
From an open door or window into someone’s private life.
From someone’s weakness at a moment when preserving their dignity is more beloved to Allah than satisfying our curiosity.
Sometimes righteousness is not in what you do.
It is in what you deliberately choose not to see.
And Then Came the Screen
Previous generations had to walk somewhere to see many of the things they were commanded to avoid.
We carry them in our pockets.
The television, phone, tablet, and computer have created something unprecedented: images can now invade our sight without our actively seeking each one.
One video ends and another begins.
One image becomes ten.
Advertisements appear without invitation.
A harmless search leads somewhere else.
A few seconds of scrolling becomes an hour of looking into other people’s bodies, homes, meals, marriages, vacations, arguments, wealth, mistakes, and private lives.
The eye was never created to absorb an endless stream of humanity.
Yet today we may see more faces, possessions, bodies, tragedies, luxuries, and temptations in one evening than previous generations saw in months.
This makes غض البصر — lowering the gaze — perhaps more necessary than ever.
Lowering your gaze today may mean turning off the television.
Closing the tab.
Unfollowing an account.
Skipping the video.
Putting down the phone.
Removing an app.
Not watching the next episode.
Or simply deciding:
My eyes do not need to see this.
The Eye Has a Path to the Heart
The Prophet ﷺ connected the eye directly with what happens within.
He said:
“The zina of the eyes is looking … and the heart desires and wishes.”
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
The sequence is profound.
The eye looks.
The heart receives.
The heart desires.
What repeatedly enters through the eyes can begin to occupy the imagination. What occupies the imagination can awaken desire. What is repeatedly desired can become normalized. And what becomes normalized may eventually cease to trouble the conscience as it once did.
This is one way the sight of the eye can affect the sight of the heart.
Not every spiritual darkness arrives suddenly.
Sometimes the light dims gradually.
A forbidden image that once disturbed you no longer does.
A person’s humiliation that once made you uncomfortable becomes entertainment.
Extravagance that once seemed excessive becomes something you desperately want.
Private matters that once embarrassed you become normal content.
A sin that once caused you to look away becomes something you watch without reaction.
And this is where the danger lies.
The physical eye may still see perfectly while the inner sight becomes increasingly dim.
Allah speaks of another kind of blindness:
“Indeed, it is not the eyes that become blind, but the hearts within the chests that become blind.”
Qur’an 22:46
This verse is not specifically a verse about lowering the gaze. But it reveals something far more frightening than losing physical sight:
A person can have functioning eyes and a heart that no longer sees.
That blindness does not necessarily happen with one glance. Hearts are affected by what we repeatedly expose them to, what we normalize, what we desire, and what we refuse to turn away from.
So protect the sight of your heart by protecting the gates through which things enter it.
Lower Your Gaze
Lower it from what Allah has forbidden.
Lower it from what belongs to others.
Lower it from what awakens lust.
Lower it from what feeds envy.
Lower it from the private lives of people.
Lower it from their faults and moments of weakness.
Lower it from images that make sin ordinary.
Lower it from endless comparison.
Lower it from screens when the screen begins choosing what your heart will consume.
And sometimes, lower it simply because you do not need to see everything that can be seen.
The believer does not ask only:
“Am I allowed to look?”
Sometimes the more important question is:
“What will this looking do to my heart?”
Guard the eye, and you guard one of the great entrances to the heart.
Because when the gaze is purified, the heart has a better chance of seeing clearly.
