The Greatest of Sins
Seventy Sins that Allah Likes That We Forsake
Building on the last blog about The Greatest of Sins ….
The FEET are home to one of the greatest of sins
16- The Sixteenth Great Sin: Fleeing in Battles and from Fighting the Enemy
The concept of marching into a battle against the enemy means attacking the enemy and breaking into his lines of defense at once. Fleeing this march and from the battle causes serious harm to the believers fi ghting for the cause of Allah. Allah said: ﴾O Believers, when you meet in battle those who deny the truth, never turn your backs on them: whoever turns his back in battle, unless as a stratagem of war, or an endeavor to join another group of believers will indeed draw down upon himself the wrath of Allah, and Hell shall be his abode and the worst indeed is that destination﴿(1). This type of grave sin also includes deceiving Muslims during crisis and hard times. When a group agrees to proceed with a certain decision that carries collective benefi t and avoids collective harm, and one of them decides to withdraw from this arrangement because it has become extremely diffi cult, and does that without consulting with the group, he is considered to have acted in deception and letdown and has abandoned the group for his own interest and will be held accountable for this great sin.
17- The Seventeenth Greatest of Sins is the most dangerous one as it requires participation of the various senses including hands eyes and tongue, and that is: The Disobedience and
Ingratitude to One’s Parents:
Disobedience and Ingratitude to Parents means to go against their lawful orders and wishes, or to be impolite with them in words and actions. It includes angering them, raising one’s voice and speaking loudly at them, treating them with disrespect, harming their feelings, and disobeying them in lawful matters (unless their orders contradict Allah’s ). Any action of that sort falls under this greatest of sins. The disobedience and ingratitude to the parents refl ects in the parent heart from the harm the child causes with either words or actions, except is made for cases where there is an order to disobey or disbelieve in Allah. Allah said: ﴾Your Lord has commanded that you should worship none but Him, and show kindness to your parents. If either or both of them attain old age with you, say no word of contempt to them and do not rebuke them, but always speak gently to them﴿(2). Punishment for the sin of disobeying parents is expedited in this world unlike other sins. Abi Bakra may Allah be pleased with him has narrated to us that the Prophet said: “Two are punishable in this world: tyranny and disobedience to parents”.(3)

1. My Lord, expand for me my chest and ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech.
2. O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, and son of Your maidservant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree upon me is forever executed, and Your judgment upon me is always just. I ask You by every name of Yours that You have named Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to any of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen, to make the Qur’an the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the removal of my sadness, and the departure of my distress.
3. O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord of everything and its Sovereign, I testify that there is no god but You, I seek refuge with You from the evil of myself, the evil of Satan, and from his temptations.
4. O Allah, I ask You for all good, both immediate and delayed, what I know of and what I do not know. I seek refuge in You from all evil, both immediate and delayed, what I know of and what I do not know. I ask You for the best of what Your servant and Prophet asked You for, and I seek refuge in You from the worst of what Your servant and Prophet sought refuge from. O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and for everything that brings me closer to it, whether by word or deed. I seek refuge in You from the Fire and everything that brings me closer to it, whether by word or deed, and I ask You to make every decree You have decreed for me good.
5. O Allah, grant us from Your fear that prevents us from disobeying You, and from Your obedience that brings us closer to Your Paradise, and from certainty that makes the hardships of this world easy for us. And bless us with hearing, sight, and strength as long as You keep us alive, and make them the inheritance of our descendants. And give us victory over those who wrong us, and help us against those who oppose us. And do not make our affliction in our religion, and do not make the world our greatest concern, nor the limit of our knowledge, and do not give power over us to those who do not show us mercy.
6. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from the burden of debts and the overpowering of men.
7. Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. You are the Bestower.
8. O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.
9. O Allah, I ask You for health and pardon in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for health and pardon in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults, and secure my fears, and protect me from all sides: from in front, from behind, from my right, from my left, and from above. I seek refuge in You from being attacked from below.
