Introducing the Essence of Fasting and Its Purpose

Q What is the relation between the closing of the month of Ramadan with the end of one’s life?

The month of Ramadan resembles the life of a person, and like Ramadan, life passes quickly and the person forgets the effort and fatigue and celebrates his achievements just like the when he celebrates Eid after the month of fasting.

Allah  has prescribed prohibitions only to make us get acquainted with Him and get closer to Him, to be honored and blessed, and as soon life ends, all prohibitions end along and thereafter begin the time of honors and pleasures; this mimics the closing of the month of Ramadan where the abstinence from food and drink end and comes the celebration of Eid. The prophet  said: "there is no comfort to the believer except with the meeting of Allah ”(1). He also said, : “there are two moments of joy for the fasting person, one upon breaking his fast and one upon meeting his Lord”.(2)

Therefore, the true Eid for a fasting person is the meeting of his Lord , in other words, the reward of fasting is the meeting of Allah , and this is of utmost beauty and the greatest of all blessings. Whomever fasts by abandoning what he likes and wants for what his Lord likes and is pleased with, wins the meeting of Allah  and is rewarded with His sight in Heaven. Allah  said: ﴾Some faces will be radiant on that Day, looking towards their Lord﴿(3). What a great win!

And what a great difference between winning Heaven with the people of the right after the stage of judgement and reproach, and winning Allah  and being honored with His Sight along with the ones drawn close to Him without judgement or reproach or prior punishment. He who wins meeting Allah at death is greeted by Him with peace, as Allah  said: ﴾Their greeting the day they meet Him is Peace﴿(4). And whomever is greeted by Allah with peace would never witness any pain thereafter: Heaven or Home of Peace is drawn close to him so that his grave becomes one of the gardens of Bliss, receiving blessing and beauty before even entering, and then he enters from Al Rayyan Gate and is honored with the Sight of the King of the Worlds, the Only Judge.

Our intention for fasting should therefore be: to fast and win Allah , His Love and Satisfaction, His proximity at all times, His Meeting at death and His Sight in Paradise, along with the beloved ones drawn near to Him .

The Day of Answered Prayers Between Dhuhr and Asr on Wednesday

Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ supplicated in Masjid Al-Fath three times on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. His supplication was answered on Wednesday between the two prayers, and he saw the signs of relief on his face. Jabir said: “Whenever I faced a significant and difficult matter, I would seek that hour and supplicate in it, and I would recognize the response.”

Recommended Remembrances and Supplications for This Day:

  • Seek forgiveness (Astaghfirullah Al-Azim) 100 times.

And upon his family and companions, according to his immense status and great rank, in every glance and breath, as much as Your knowledge encompasses."

  • La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu min al-zalimin (There is no god but You, Glory be to You, indeed I was of the wrongdoers) 7 times.

The Supplication the Prophet ﷺ Made Between Dhuhr and Asr on Wednesday:

In the narration of Ibn Zubala from Umar ibn Al-Hakam, he reported that someone who prayed behind the Prophet ﷺ in Masjid Al-Fath heard him supplicate:

"O Allah, all praise belongs to You. You have guided me from misguidance. No one can honor whom You humiliate, nor can anyone humiliate whom You honor. No one can give might to those You debase, nor can anyone debase those You grant might. No one can support those You forsake, nor can anyone forsake those You support. No one can give to whom You withhold, nor can anyone withhold from whom You give. No one can provide sustenance to those You deprive, nor can anyone deprive those You sustain. No one can raise those You lower, nor can anyone lower those You raise. No one can tear apart what You have veiled, nor can anyone conceal what You have exposed. No one can bring near what You have set far, nor can anyone distance what You have brought close."

Then, the Prophet ﷺ received the glad tidings of victory over the confederates while he was in that very place in the mosque.
