The Essence of Fasting and Its Purpose

What Allah means in the Hadith Qudsi: “All of the deeds of the son of Adam is his, except for the fasting, it is for Me and I reward for it”.(1)

Abu Huraira  said: The Prophet  said: “All of the deeds of the son of Adam is multiplied: the good deed receiving tenfold to seven hundredfold reward, with the exception of fasting, it is done for My sake and I reward for it as one abandons food and desire for Me.(2)

In order to understand this hadith, we ought to understand the meaning of love.

What are the signs of love?

The most important sign of love is sacrifice; it means that you give up on what you love and choose what your beloved wants or loves, while feeling happy because you entered happiness to your beloved’s heart.

To Allah  belongs the utmost example of perfection, that is the example of a mother, she loves her children and sacrifices her happiness for theirs and her comfort for theirs. She would abstain from eating to feed her children, as her happiness to see them eating is greater than the pleasure of eating herself.

The Hadith Qudsi tells us: “All acts of the son of Adam are his, a good deed received tenfold and some seven hundredfold in reward”, meaning that every good deed is intended by the son of Adam for a reward from Allah , except for fasting, which is observed solely for the love of Allah. In fact, fasting entails that you leave what you like for what Allah likes, as in the Hadith Qudsi: “he abandons his pleasures and food for Me”.

Ibn Atallah Al Sakandari said: “when you love something you become a servant to it (meaning a follower), and Allah  does not like that you become servant to other than Him”.

The loving person becomes obedient to his beloved, and the sign of love is that you abandon what your self likes just to win His Love and enter in His Grace. In this context we may mention the poetry line:

Where are the loving ones for whom became easy

To exert oneself for the precious and the valuable

In fact, whomever aims for reward is given the reward from afar, and whomever abandons the desires for the sake of Allah, enters the doors of proximity with the beloved ones.

The sign of the love of Allah is the following of his Prophet : ﴾Say, if you love Allah follow me and Allah will love you﴿(3). The Prophet  loved his Lord so much that his pleasure and desire became to follow what Allah wants and loves. The prophet said: “None of you truly believes until his desires are subservient to that which I have brought”.(4)

Dua’a of the Day

O Allah, I ask You for all that is good, in this world and the Hereafter, that which I know and that which I do not know. And I seek refuge in You from all that is evil, in this world and the Hereafter, that which I know and that which I do not know.

O Allah, grant me health in my body, strength in my faith, abundance in my sustenance, blessings in my lifespan, well-being in my health, light in my heart, happiness in this world, and success in the Hereafter.

O Allah, relieve me from every worry, grant me a way out of every distress, protect me from every affliction, and forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day of Judgment.

O Allah, make my affairs easy, guide me to what You love and are pleased with, lead me to the best of manners and deeds—none guides to the best except You—and turn me away from bad manners and deeds, for none turns them away except You.

O Allah, grant me lawful, pure, and abundant provision, make me content with what You have given me, bless me in what You have bestowed upon me, sustain Your blessings upon me, accept my efforts, and grant me success in all my endeavors.

O Allah, make me among the grateful and the mindful, the devout and the humble, the patient and the steadfast. Grant me the sweetness of calling upon You, the beauty of relying on You, and the certainty of trusting in Your bounty and mercy.

O Allah, rectify my religion, which is the foundation of my affairs, rectify my worldly life, which is my place of livelihood, and rectify my Hereafter, which is my eternal abode. Make life an increase for me in every good and make death a relief from every evil.

O Allah, protect me from all directions—from in front of me, behind me, my right, my left, and above me—and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being harmed from below me.

O Allah, make me among those who are pleased with You as their Lord, with Islam as their religion, and with Muhammad ﷺ as their Prophet and Messenger. Let me live upon this, die upon this, and be resurrected upon this.

O Allah, I ask You for the highest level of Jannah (Al-Firdaws Al-A‘la) without reckoning or prior punishment, and I seek refuge in You from the Hellfire and from anything that leads to it in speech or action.
