The Great Sins

Seventy Sins that Allah Likes That We Forsak

6- The Thirty Sixth Great Sin: Playing with Measure, Weight,

Specifications and the Like Giving short measure means to give an understatement and

deficiency, and to give short measure to someone means giving him less than what was taken from him. Allah  says: ﴾Woe to those who give short measure, who demand full measure for themselves from people but when they give them by measurement or weight, they give less﴿(1). Those described in this verse are the ones who give short measure, meaning if they take for themselves they take more than they are entitled for and when they give they give less than what is due. The term measure includes specifications and criteria in

transactions between people. For example, a contractor who submits his work incomplete or with lower standards and asks for full pay, or an employer who asks the employee for additional work than what he contracted him to do without compensation; or an employee who works less than he is asked to do in terms of quality and quantity and then gets full wage; all this fall under a type of theft and betrayal, and of taking money wrongfully.

37- The Thirty Seventh Great Sin: Cuckold Behavior

A cuckold is one who has no jealousy for his wife and daughter, and the pimp is one who seeks corruption for them. That includes those who do not forbid their wives and daughters to wear inappropriate clothing and allow them to go to mixed pools and nightclubs. It includes those who allow their daughter to be in illicit relationships with men or keep silent about it, or allow his wife or daughter to dance with foreign men. The Prophet  said: "There are three whom Allah the Almighty will not look at on the Day of Resurrection: the one

who does not honor his parents, the woman who acts manly, and the cuckold."(2)

38- The Thirty Eighth Great Sin: Deliberate Failure to Fulfill Promises

The one who commits this great sin is the one who promises with the intention of not fulfilling his promise, or the one who knows at the time of the promise that he will not keep

his promise. The Prophet  said: "One who has these four characteristics is a pure hypocrite, and one who has one of them has a strand of hypocrisy until he abandons it: If he is trusted he betrays, if he speaks he tells lies, if he makes a covenant he proves treacherous, and if he disputes he acts obscene and extreme"(3). This does not include ones who make

promises and intend to fulfill them and try their best to do so, but circumstances out of their control prevent them.

39- The Thirty Ninth Great Sin: Not Purifying Oneself from Urine (Both men and women)

Most of the torment of the grave is from this particular sin. Al

Hakim narrated in his Sahih from Abu Huraira: the Prophet said: “Most of the torment of the grave is from urine”(4). Another narration mentioned “generally, the torment of the grave is form urine”(5). Abu Huraira  that the Prophet  said: “Purify yourselves from urine, for the torment of the grave is generally from urine”.(6)

40- The Fortieth Great Sin: Hypocrisy in Intentions

This is one’s love to being seen and heard for his good actions, and that is generally his main motivation to do good. Allah says: ﴾Woe to those who pray but whose hearts are not in their

prayers, those who do things just to be seen by others, who are

uncharitable even over the smallest of things﴿.(7) Hypocrisy in intentions is basically to seek the admiration of people by showing them good character, it is winning the hearts

of creations by the means of obedience of the Allah. Al Hassan Al Basri said: Hypocrisy in intentions originates from the love of praise, but that also means requesting wordly rewards instead of seeking to win the Heraft er and pleasing Allah. In other words, the actions are intended for other than Allah , and that means one does not conceal good deeds for the sake of Allah but boasts about them to others. The Prophet  said: “The thing I fear most

for you is the lesser shirk, and people asked, what is the lesser shirk oh messenger of Allah, and he answered: the hypocrisy in intentions, for Allah may He be exalted tells them on the Day of Judgement as people are being rewarded for their deeds: Go to those whom you sought pleasing in your lifetime and seek reward from them, if you find any”.(8)

Allah  says: ﴾So let who hopes to meet his Lord do good deeds and let him associate no one else in the worship of Lord﴿(9). This means that one who wants to meet his Lord should not intend his deeds for no one else. Allah also says: ﴾And We shall take all that they did and turn it into scattered dust﴿(10). This refers to deeds that were intended for other than Allah, that become void and transform into scattered dust.

Some wise men compared whoever works with hypocrisy in intention to a person who fills his bag with pebbles and takes it to the market to pay with it, and is rejected by the seller; he

gets nothing but words from people admiring his full bag, and is not rewarded with anything else(4). Al Fudail Bin Ayyad  said: Quitting deeds for the sake of people is hypocrisy, and deeds performed for the sake of people is shirk (association with Allah), and faithfulness is to be salvaged by Allah from both sins.(11)

Supplication for Completing the Qur’an

  • O Allah, have mercy on me through the Great Qur’an, and make it for me a light, guidance, mercy, and healing.

  • O Allah, remind me of what I have forgotten from it, teach me what I do not know, and grant me its recitation throughout the night and at the edges of the day. And make it a proof for me, O Lord of the worlds.

  • O Allah, set right my religion which is the safeguard of my affairs, set right my worldly life in which is my livelihood, and set right my Hereafter in which is my return. Make life an increase for me in all that is good and make death a relief for me from all evil.

  • O Allah, make the best part of my life its end, the best of my deeds its final acts, and the best of my days the day I meet You.

  • O Allah, make the Qur’an a proof for me and not against me, make it an intercessor for me on the Day of Judgment, and make it a means for raising my ranks in Paradise.

  • O Allah, make us among the people of the Qur’an, those who are Your people and Your special ones. Make it a light in our hearts, a cure for our chests, a light for our insights, and make it our companion in this world, our comfort in the grave, our guide over the bridge (Sirat), and our companion in Paradise.

  • O Allah, forgive me and my parents, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was young. Forgive my brothers and sisters in faith, forgive the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, those who are alive and those who have passed away. Unite their hearts, reconcile their affairs, and guide them to the paths of peace.

  • O Allah, grant us a good ending, take our souls while You are pleased with us and not angry. Make the last of our words in this world the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Make our graves a garden from the gardens of Paradise and not a pit from the pits of Hell.

  • O Allah, accept from us our fasting, our standing in prayer, our recitation of the Qur’an, and all our deeds in the month of Ramadan. Make them sincere for Your noble face and a means to attain the gardens of bliss.

  • O Allah, allow us to reach many Ramadans, make us among those whose deeds are accepted and whose sins are forgiven. Protect us from the Hellfire and its torment, and grant us never-ending bliss in Your Paradise.

  • O Allah, make us among those who recite the Qur’an and are elevated by it, and do not make us among those who recite it but are doomed.

  • O Allah, make the Qur’an an intercessor for us, and make us among those whose recitation, prayers, and fasting are accepted. Forgive us, our parents, and all the Muslims.

  • O Allah, fulfill our needs and the needs of the Muslims. O Allah, suffice us with Your lawful provisions over the unlawful, and make us independent by Your bounty from everyone else. Provide us with pure, blessed sustenance without limit and from places we do not expect, and make all our difficult matters easy.

  • O Allah, forgive me and my parents, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was young.

  • O Allah, reward them with goodness for their good deeds, and pardon and forgive them for their mistakes.

  • O Allah, bless them with long lives filled with goodness, grant them a good ending, and make their graves gardens from the gardens of Paradise.

  • O Allah, protect our sons and daughters, and make them among the people of the Qur’an. Guide them to what You love and are pleased with, and make them righteous and pious.

  • O Allah, shield them from all harm and misguidance, grant them success in both worlds, and make them a source of happiness for us and for the Muslim community.

Ameen
