Introducing the Essence of Fasting and Its Purpose

What is the difference between fasting and the other acts of worship such as prayer, alms (zakat) and pilgrimage?

Most of the acts of worship involve performing certain actions such as praying or paying alms or performing pilgrimage. However, fasting is the only act of worship defined by concepts of abandoning and abstinence.

Fasting is abstaining rather than doing, therefore the question is: what are we going to abstain from during the month of Ramadan, and not what are we going to do during the month of Ramadan. The more we abandon sins, the more our worship is beneficial, and the more we abandon bad morals, the more the worship is accepted.

Abdullah Ibn Omar may Allah be pleased with him said: you may pray until your backs bend and you may fast until you become frail, you will only be accepted when your devoutness prevents you from committing sins(3). The honored ancestors warned from unlawful money, and Ibn Al Mubarak even said: Returning a suspected Dirham is more beloved to me than donating a hundred thousand(4).

Very often, our self finds it more difficult to abandon a sin than to perform an act of worship. For example, some people who are on bad or non-talking terms with others find it easier to travel for Umra, to pray 20 rak’as of Taraweeh in the mosque throughout the Holy Month of Ramadan, or even to complete several readings of the Holy Quran, rather than forgiving the person they fought with or to pardon any wrong they did or to visit him after a period of disruption.

Dua’a of the Day

For Our Offspring 🌟

The Prophet ﷺ taught us that dua is a powerful weapon, and there is no doubt that the dua a parent makes for their child carries immense weight. It is one of the purest forms of love a parent can offer. The prayer for a child’s well-being, guidance, and success can shape their destiny and have a profound effect on their life, both in this world and the Hereafter.

"And [Ibrahim] said, 'My Lord, make this city [Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshiping idols.'” (Quran 14:35)

Today, we raise our hands in prayer for our offspring, asking Allah to grant them strength, wisdom, and guidance. May He protect them from harm, grant them success, and bless them with the best of this life and the next. Ameen. 🙏

A Comprehensive Dua’a for Children

O Allah, protect my children, guide them to obey You, and bless them for me. O Allah, make them guides and rightly guided, neither misguided nor misleading. O Allah, instill love for faith in their hearts, beautify it for them, and make them detest disbelief, immorality, and disobedience.

O Allah, grant my children the understanding of the knowledgeable, teach them what they do not know, remind them of what they have forgotten, and open for them the blessings of the heavens and the earth. You are the All-Hearing, the Responsive. O Allah, You who taught Moses—teach them, You who granted Solomon understanding—grant them understanding, and You who bestowed wisdom and eloquence upon Luqman—grant them wisdom and eloquence.

O Allah, teach my sons and daughters what they are ignorant of, remind them of what they forget, and bless them with the treasures of the heavens and the earth. You are the All-Hearing, the Responsive. O Allah, I ask You to grant them strong memory, quick understanding, and clarity of mind. O Allah, make them guides and rightly guided.

O Allah, make them among Your most blessed servants in this world and the Hereafter, among Your chosen ones whose light shines before them and on their right, who fear nothing and grieve not. O Allah, make them preservers of Your Book, callers to Your path, and defenders of Your religion, and allow them to spread the teachings of Your Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him).

O Allah, forgive their sins, purify their hearts, protect their chastity, and perfect their character. Fill their hearts with light and wisdom, and make them worthy of receiving Your blessings. O Allah, make them among those who remember You and are remembered by You, attach their hearts to Your obedience, and make them among those who turn to You with sincerity and devotion.

O Allah, open for them the gates of wisdom, grant them knowledge that benefits, adorn their character with patience, honor them with piety, and bless them with well-being.

O Allah, grant them righteous teachers and good companions. Instill in them contentment and satisfaction, and purify their hearts from attachment to anything but You. Make them among those whom You love and who love You in return.

O Allah, bless them with Your love and the love of every deed that brings them closer to You. O Allah, make them among those who humble themselves before You and are elevated by it, who submit to Your majesty and are beloved by You, who seek closeness to You and are drawn near, and who ask of You and are answered.

O Allah, protect my children and my descendants from the evils, both visible and hidden. Make them grateful for Your blessings and complete them upon them, O Most Merciful of the merciful. O Allah, unlock the fountains of wisdom from their hearts and let them flow from their tongues. O Allah, grant them everything that will benefit them in this world and the Hereafter, whether I have remembered it or forgotten it, whether it has been made clear or kept hidden, whether I have announced it or kept it secret. O Allah, make them among those whose sustenance is abundant, protected from humiliation except to You, safeguarded from oppression by Your justice, and spared from afflictions through Your mercy.

O Allah, I ask You by Your beautiful names, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, to bless my children and descendants, and not cause them harm. Grant them success in obeying You, and provide me with their kindness. O Allah, grant all the Muslim children the same as I ask for my own, O Possessor of Glory and Honor. O Allah, make the Holy Qur’an the spring of their hearts, a cure for their chests, and a light for their eyes. O Allah, bring joy to Your Prophet, the Chosen One, through them, guide them to what You love and accept, and make them among those who humble themselves before You. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon the noblest of messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, the trustworthy Prophet, and his family and companions.

Ameen
