Quranic Miracles

The Definition of Miracle

Miracles are extraordinary events that happen beyond the ordinary course of nature. Miracles are a sign of the divine intervention of Allah in the world. They are not random or purposeless, but rather serve as a testimony to the truth of the message of the prophets and messengers.

Miracles can serve to support and strengthen the faith of believers and can lead others to accept the truth of the message. However, they can also be a test of faith, as not everyone may accept them as a divine sign.

"And when We said to you, 'Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people.' And We did not make the sight which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur'an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression." (Quran 17:60)

Miracles are often associated with the prophets and messengers who were chosen by Allah to deliver his message to the people. The miracles performed by the prophets by the permit of Allah served as a clear indication of their special status as chosen by Allah, and they were often used to challenge the disbelief of those who doubted the message. Even though miracles are not the only proof of the truth of the message, they remain an essential part of Islamic faith and history.

Prophethood Miracles

Throughout Islamic tradition, prophets have been supported by miracles as evidence of their special status and the truth of their message. For example, Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) was created without a father or mother, while Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) survived being thrown into a fire and was able to father a child in old age. Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) (peace be upon him) was granted many miracles, including control over the wind and jinn, and understanding the language of animals. Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) was given a staff by Allah which he used to part the Red Sea and to perform other miracles. Prophet Isa (Jesus) (peace be upon him) healed the sick and brought the dead back to life by the permit of Allah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was given practical miracles such as the splitting of the moon and the miraculous feeding of large groups of people, as well as being taken on the Night Journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and then to the heavens to meet with Allah. These miracles serve as a testimony to the power of Allah and the truth of His chosen messengers.

The Eternal Miracle

However, the greatest miracle of Prophet Muhammad is the Quran, which is the final and eternal revelation from Allah. The Quran is the ultimate miracle of Islam, as it is a divine book that contains guidance for all of humanity, and its beauty and eloquence are unmatched by any human work. The Quran is a timeless and unchangeable guide to life, and its message remains relevant and applicable to all people, regardless of time and place.

In our times, it is not common for people to commit to Islam solely through witnessing miracles. Rather, many notable committed people have been convinced through dialogue, intellectual inquiry, good company and brotherhood in the Muslim community, and a thorough exploration of the teachings of Islam.

Abu Bakr R said when he was told of Israa & Mi’raj: "If I believe him in matters pertaining to divine revelation, then why shouldn't I believe him in the matter of Isra' and Mi'raj?"

Miracles as an Empowerment Tool

The Battle of Badr is great example, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions were greatly outnumbered and outmatched by their opponents. In this situation, Allah sent angels to aid the Muslims in their battle, providing them with miraculous support that allowed them to achieve victory despite the odds against them.

The miracle of Israa and Miraj occurred right after the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) faced rejection and hostility from the people of Ta'if. The Prophet had gone to Ta'if to seek support for his message, but he was rejected and even stoned by the people there.

After this painful incident, the Prophet made a heartfelt supplication to God, known as the Du'a of Ta'if.

"O Allah, to You I complain of my weakness, my lack of resources and my being unimportant in the sight of the people. O Most Merciful of the merciful, You are the Lord of the oppressed and You are my Lord. To whom do You leave me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility? Or to an enemy You have given power over me? As long as You are not angry with me, I do not care what I face. I would, however, be much happier with Your mercy. I seek refuge in the light of Your face by which all darkness is dispelled and every affair of this world and the next is set right, lest Your anger or Your displeasure descends upon me. Yours is the right to reproach until You are pleased. There is no power and no might except by You."

This Du'a reflects the Prophet's deep faith in God and his trust in His mercy and guidance, even in the face of adversity and hardship. It is a reminder that even in our darkest moments, we can turn to God for comfort and strength. Allah the All-Hearing, All-Knowing had a plan to tranquil the heart of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Allah invited His beloved prophet to meet Him as a reward to his patience and compensation to his wounds and comfort to his exhausted heart and assurance to Allah's aid and support.

Non-Prophetic Miracles

Miracles are acts of divine intervention, yet it can be attributed to non-religious person. However, it is important to note that these miraculous acts are not considered to be on the same level as the miracles of the prophets, which were given as direct signs of their prophethood and were essential in establishing the truth of their message, in fact, those miracles are most likely a trial to people to signefy the true believers from others.

Allah may provide miraculous support to righteous individuals when they are in need and have exhausted all earthly means of support. There are some instances where righteous individuals who are not prophets have been granted miracles by Allah. For example, some of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were known to perform miraculous acts during their lifetimes. The companions were very close to the Prophet, and their faith and devotion to Allah were so strong that they were granted extraordinary abilities. Additionally, some scholars in Islamic history have been attributed with miracles that are signs of their piety and devotion to Allah.

In other instances, throughout Islamic history, righteous individuals who have faced great challenges and hardships have been granted miraculous support by Allah. These miracles serve as a sign of Allah's favor and as a means of strengthening the faith and resolve of the believers. However, it is important to note that these miraculous acts are not to be relied upon as a substitute for sincere effort and striving in the path of Allah. Rather, they are a manifestation of Allah's mercy and grace, and a reminder of His power and majesty.

Miracles as Trials

While miracles can certainly inspire awe and wonder in those who witness them, they are not necessarily a guarantee of true faith or lasting commitment to Islam. In fact, some who are initially drawn to Islam because of a miraculous experience may later abandon their faith when faced with difficult challenges or unanswered questions. Therefore, it is essential to focus on building strong intellectual foundations, providing a supportive and welcoming community, and engaging in meaningful dialogue based on the eternal miracle, the Quran, with those who are interested in learning more about Islam.
